This August, I finally returned to India. It had been two years since my last visit, and it felt incredibly special to be back. The last time, I traveled with the whole O My Bag team and this time, it was a smaller crew: Jessica, our Head of Production and Sustainability, and Michelle, our Videographer & Photographer.
Jess and I have been to Kolkata many times together over the years. The last time it was just the two of us was quite a while ago, so it felt extra good to be “back at it again.” We’ve had many adventures here, from navigating chaotic traffic to endless hours spent perfecting samples. We work in a very natural rhythm: creative ideas flow easily, and we somehow always manage to make things happen on the spot.
The main purpose of this trip was to work on our upcoming SS26 collection (and even start developing some pieces that might make it into FW26 - it’s never 100% defined at this stage). Together with our local partners, we experimented with new leathers, colors, and shapes, exploring what the next chapter of O My Bag design will look like. These early sampling sessions are where ideas are born from sketches on paper to tangible prototypes that will eventually reach our customers.
Beyond design, this trip was also about strengthening relationships with the makers and suppliers we’ve collaborated with for over a decade. Sitting together, sharing chai, and discussing ideas in person always deepens our understanding of one another, something no email or online call can replace.
No trip to Kolkata is complete without visiting the social projects we support. This time, we met with the incredible women who make our dust bags, affectionately known as the Dustbag Ladies, who hold a very special place in our hearts. In their remote village, this work empowers them to build independent lives while caring for their children.
Usually artisans in remote areas rarely get to see where their creations end up or how much joy they bring. That’s why visiting them is so meaningful to us - to see their dedication firsthand, to celebrate their craftsmanship, and to show them how deeply their work matters. Dancing, taking selfies, and sharing stories reminded us of the very human connection behind every bag.
Michelle also visited Future Hope and Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre (KMWSC), two of our long-standing giving back partners. Seeing how these initiatives continue to grow and support their communities was a moving reminder of why we do what we do. Each visit renews our commitment to creating not just beautiful products, but also positive change.
This trip was also an opportunity to create fresh content for our customers, the kind that brings you closer to where your bag comes from. Michelle documented the process behind the scenes, capturing photos and videos that will soon feature across our website, social media, and in-store storytelling. From the busy workshop floors to the vibrant streets of Kolkata, every image helps share the world behind your O My Bag.
